QUEEN'S HEALTH OUTREACH

QHO Northern: QHO is a student-run NGO dedicated to promoting health through needs-based peer education initiatives both locally and internationally. Students from diverse faculties at Queen’s University plan and implement health-based curriculums in elementary schools, high schools and various community groups. We aim to enhance sustainability and effectiveness by partnering with likeminded organizations wherever we work.

The Northern Canada Project

The Northern Canada Project most recently includes five different locations, three in northern Ontario, Pickle Lake, Mishkeegogamang and Webequie, as well as Pond Inlet, Nunavut, and Salluit, Quebec. Peer Educators travel in pairs to each location in the spring for five to seven weeks and teach in the community’s elementary and high schools.

The Northern Project’s curriculum encompasses a wide range of health topics including substance abuse, responsible sexuality, and anger and grief management. In addition to teaching, QHO facilitates and participates in extracurricular programs and community events. We strive to create sustainability through an emphasis on leadership and empowerment.

In 2011 QHO started a pilot project in Webequie, Ontario and closed one of our oldest projects after it was deemed to be sustainable in Resolute Bay, Nunavut.
